Secret Tree Hole for Migrant Children
Following the “Dream Schoolbag” event, Tan Lantian(Sky) launched the Secret Tree Hole activity on August 24, 2025. The wonderful session took place on the third floor, Building 19, Tianan Science Park, Panyu, Guangzhou.

The activity was designed to help migrant children recognize, express, and regulate their emotions, while guiding them to collaboratively explore healthy coping strategies with their peers.
We set up several life-based situational questions for the children, including “How do you feel when your parents are not at home?”, “How do you handle conflicts with friends?”, and “How do you feel when receiving praise from teachers?”
Children wrote down their true feelings on colorful notes and placed them anonymously inside the “tree hole”, which served as a warm emotional shelter and a safe outlet for their inner thoughts. The collected notes revealed the children’s most genuine emotions and struggles.

When reflecting on the absence of their parents, most children described feelings of sadness, loneliness, and fear. The majority of their self-soothing methods relied on mobile phones and games, while only a small number of children chose to interact with friends or rest. The results indicated that due to insufficient parental companionship, electronic devices easily become children’s primary source of emotional comfort, putting them at higher risk of internet addiction.
In contrast, children’s responses toward teacher recognition were overwhelmingly positive, including feelings of happiness and pride. Many drew smiling faces and hearts to express joy and a sense of achievement. This demonstrates that migrant children are highly sensitive to external affirmation and strongly crave attention and recognition. During group sharing sessions, participants gradually learned perspective-taking and basic emotional self-adjustment.
Some children shared: “When I feel sad, I draw pictures and it makes me feel better.” Others suggested: “We can talk to our friends.” These little ideas reflect wisdom. They prove that with proper guidance, children can identify their troubles and find healthy emotional outlets.

The Secret Tree Hole activity revealed that migrant children do not have flat, one-dimensional mental states. They feel sorrow and loneliness, but also warmth and hope. They need companionship, and above all, patient listeners.
Moving forward, we hope to continue the Secret Tree Hole project. Besides offline tree holes at events, we plan to build an “online mood corner” so children can voice and share their feelings anytime. We will also hold workshops on emotional regulation to help children understand and manage their emotions.
Migrant children may lack long-term parental presence as they grow. If we offer them a space to speak, pour out their hearts and receive responses, their minds can be nurtured, and they can learn to draw strength from hardship. May these children, with community support, no longer keep secrets locked inside, but speak up bravely, growing into resilient young people with bright hope in their eyes.

(PS: The Dream Schoolbag event was very well received. For this Secret Tree Hole session, Sky even received flowers as a token of thanks from the children. It was such a heartwarming moment.)
