From 13:00 to 17:00 on Sunday, July 13, 2025, the “Dream Schoolbag” activity, initiated, planned and hosted by Tan Lantian(Sky), was held on the third floor of Building 19, Tianan Science Park, Panyu District, Guangzhou. Sky and a group of migrant children took part in this activity. The children painted schoolbags of their own imagination, filling them with their expectations for life and little dreams.1_20250825113150_196_98mvlzys.jpg

During the painting session, the children showed rich imagination. The colourful schoolbags contained not only stationery, but also their aspirations for the future 2_20250825113217_198_98b94fyh.jpg 3_20250825113255_201_98ikmftg.jpg However, when talking about “life dreams”, only one out of nine children hoped to become a doctor in the future, one wanted to be a business owner, and one aimed to score 100 points in exams. Most of the remaining children did not have clear dreams, and some simply said they “wanted to use mobile phones”. Compared with long-term goals, they showed more immediate interest in electronic products such as mobile phones and watches. 4_20250825113426_202_98iqz5y8.jpg 4_20250825113427_203_98cmu2de.jpg

When asked about their “short-term wishes”, most of their answers centred on electronic devices. This reflects a dilemma: these children are mostly migrant children who moved to cities with their migrant-worker parents. Lacking consistent companionship and guidance from adults as they grow up, they often turn to mobile phones for comfort and entertainment when facing loneliness and stress. Long-time immersion in the digital world satisfies their temporary curiosity, yet to some extent replaces their thinking about the future. This reminds us that beyond material support, these children need their dreams ignited and emotional companionship. Helping children shift from “looking down at mobile phones” to “looking up toward the future” is an important task ahead of us. 5_20250825113232_199_98erjeqg.jpg 6_20250825113233_200_988vuyc2.jpg Our team will further improve the “Dream Schoolbag” activity and conduct an online “wish list” survey to let more people hear and respond to children’s voices. It is hoped that with care and support from the community, migrant children can gradually get out of this predicament and embrace the future bravely.
